Larry Sultan

Sad news today, Larry Sultan passed away. His influence on modern photography cannot be measured. The photo community has lost one of the greats.

The Photographic Dictionary

I came across the brilliant, amazing website, The Photographic Dictionary. You can select a specific letter, than select a word starting with that letter, and the site displays an image defining that word. The site is so simple, yet so clever and the photos are quirky and beautiful. I loved perusing through the various images.

(the image above is taken by Steven Ly, his word is "dangle")

Hassy days

I have been doing a lot of cleaning/organizing today. I have come across several images that I had completely forgotten about. This is one I took earlier this year. I was shooting like crazy with my Hasselblad (this image is cropped) but decided to put it down when I realized that it was time to learn digital. I enjoy shooting digital, but there is a certain feel in my Hassy images that I have yet to translate to digital. I love the tones in this image and the mood. Maybe its time to revisit the Hassy.

Morning Light

I came across this image while cleaning up/organizing my digital files.

Taylor

Here's one more I shot of Taylor. Totally different mood than the beach shots.

Mark Peckmezian

Today's post on Feaverish is Mark Peckmezian. I checked out his site and love the spontaneous quality of his photos. I love going through old photos at antique stores; his photos have a similar feel, but with a modern day twist. I also love his site design. All around good stuff!

In Between Moment

I had a shoot today; this is one of the shots I took. I really like random, in-between moments like this one. I like that you can't see her face. I am trying to figure out the best way to direct moments like this, so they aren't accidental.

Carpet dreams

I took this image of Celisse last week. We were shooting at a small sushi restaurant and I fell in love with this crazy, floral patterned carpet. I feel like this is an almost there shot. Maybe I need to live with it for a while. I feel like it may be lacking in something, but I am not sure what.

Walking the Dogs

My sister has two dogs, one a German short haired and the other a chihuahua. I took this photo of her and HRH (his royal highness) Felipe one afternoon on a dog walk. I love the expression on Felipe's face.

Leslie Williamson

This evening I went to Design Within Reach to listen to Leslie Williamson's presentation on a new body of work. She has spent time over the last 4 years photographing the homes of designers. It was such an inspiring presentation and luckily her project will be published in a book next fall. I can't wait to see it!

Man oh man do I love Eric Ogden's work. I love his use of lighting and the mysterious quality to the images. Check out his site for more amazing photos.

Assisting 101

I have been very busy this week assisting a local photographer on a job that has lasted several days. I am very thankful to have this opportunity to do some hands on learning. The first assistant gave me some very straightforward, blunt advice regarding assisting: "First lesson of assisting: Don't mess up." Pretty basic advice that I can appreciate and follow!
